PushHar Foundation Champions Menstrual Health for Girls in Malawi

A local charitable organization, PushHar Foundation, is making strides in promoting menstrual health and self-care among girls in Malawi.

The foundation, which was established in July 2025 to address the challenges girls face during menstruation, says it was motivated by the sight of many girls missing school due to lack of sanitary pads.

According to Gladys Costas fyso the founder of the organization, said they chose to focus on girls and menstrual health because of her personal experience and period poverty remains one of the major reasons girls drop out of school, especially in rural areas.

Gladys explains that its work on the ground involves distributing sanitary pads and providing education on self-care and menstrual hygiene in schools and communities. Fyso also clarified that the foundation operates purely as a non-profit charity and relies on well-wishers and personal contributions to fund its activities. The foundation has not been approached by any well known organization but it is about to partner with another organization that helps women as well, colled Nyezinyezi Womens.

Fyson says the foundation has reached out to five hundred girls in Lilongwe, with a memorable impact on girls who have been able to return to school and regain their confidence.

However, the foundation faces challenges such as stigma, myths surrounding menstruation, and limited access to remote areas.

It advises girls to maintain proper hygiene, change pads regularly, and seek guidance without shame during menstruation.

On visibility, the foundation says media coverage has helped to raise awareness about its work and attract more support.

Looking ahead, PushHar Foundation plans to expand its reach to more districts in the next two to three years and become a leading voice in menstrual health advocacy.

The foundation has since appealed to well-wishers, individuals and organizations to partner with them through donations, funding or volunteering.
