23 year old gets jailed
Chikondi Phiri, a 23 year old suspected of a series of house break-ins in Area 36, Lilongwe, was caught on Thursday, October 9, 2025, sparking anger among residents. The near lynching incident was averted only by timely police intervention.
Neighbors say Phiri was spotted attempting to enter homes late in the afternoon. “We have been living in fear for weeks because some houses have been robbed,” said Miriam Banda, a long-time resident. “When we saw him, frustrations reached a boiling point, and some people wanted to teach him a harsh lesson.”Phiri’s neighbor, Peter Kumwenda, expressed mixed feelings: “I believe he should face justice, but violence is not the answer. We need a better system of protecting our homes and guiding our youth.”
Chief Nyirenda of Area 36 kandikore condemned the attempted mob justice and called for patience. “The community must work with the police to end crime,” he said. “Vigilantism will only make things worse for everyone.”
Police confirmed Phiri’s arrest linked him to several thefts. “We are gathering evidence and ensuring that justice is served within the law,” she said.Chikondi Phiri’s background remains largely unknown, but some community members suggest he may be influenced by poverty and lack of employment opportunities in the area.
The police have urged residents to report any suspicious activity promptly and stressed the importance of law enforcement in maintaining order.This case sheds light on the deep challenges facing young people in Lilongwe and the urgent need for community programs, better policing, and social support to reduce crime rate.
