MAN ON THE RUN FOR THEFT
By Laura Mpoka
A shocking incident of theft has unfolded in a local family residing in Blantyre bangwe. A man, who hadn't been in touch with his niece for many years due to her father's abandonment of the family, appeared out of the blue. Frank Chibanga asked his sister-in-law Ruth Mphero for his niece's phone number, claiming he wanted to check in on her.
The next day, he called Chifuniro Adamson the niece, asking where she was and stating that he was just checking on her. The following day, he visited her, asking to borrow her phone, claiming his was switched off and he needed to call someone about a contract.
After making the call, he excused himself, saying he had to go to the market to meet the person and would return soon. However, he didn't return the phone and instead sold it to fund his travel to Lilongwe for a job opportunity.
When Chifuniro visited her uncle's house to retrieve her phone, his wife revealed that he had traveled and sold the phone to fund his trip. The uncle's wife claimed that he had been struggling financially and needed to make ends meet.
Chifuniro was outraged, confronting her aunt about the situation. "What your husband has done is theft," she said. "Despite us not being in touch for years, I still felt mercy and lent him my phone. How can he do this to me?" She refused to accept her aunt's plea that she shouldn't report the matter to the police just because of their family relationship.
The aunt begged Chifuniro not to report the incident, offering to have her husband return the money or make amends. "My husband can't go to prison over 400,000 kwacha," she said. "You guys are family; it's nothing." However, the niece was resolute, stating that the phone was important to her and she would report the case to the police.
Chifuniro followed through on her word, reporting the incident to the authorities. The case is now in the hands of the police.
