An environmental right activist Mathews Malata has called for a shift in mindset among Malawians towards the environmental protection in the country. The appeal comes in response to the ongoing charcoal burning taking place in various forests across the country.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Malata underscored the need for Malawians to move away from viewing trees solely as a source of charcoal and instead recognize their vital role in the environment.
"Trees play a vital role in the environment, including refreshing the air and aiding in rain formation," he said.
He further stressed that Malawi still faces significant challenges in protecting the environment and called for unity to safeguard the nation's natural resources.
The government has emphasized that need for alternative energy sources. The minister of forest and natural resources honorable Nancy Tembo has encouraged malawians to adopt alternative fuel sources, highlighting the devastating effects of deforestation caused by charcoal production
In response to the activist she further encourages malawians to plant trees and find other alternatives that replace charcoal burning. It has to start by us to preserve our natural resources and environment to reduce natural disasters that come due to reckless cutting down of trees.
