Author, Fidelis Kumwenda, has published his second book, Matrilineal, a thought-provoking exploration of the cultural traditions and their impact on societal progress.
Through relatable characters and themes, the book empowers readers to reevaluate their beliefs, attitudes—and behaviors.
In an interview on Monday, Kumwenda said he was inspired by the Mw2063, a national development blue print to come up with his book.
He said: “Development requires each one of us to play a role. We must embrace those habits that ensure progress of communities.”
Through the adventure of the two characters, Ngoza and Kasiwa—the author exposes the entrenched mindsets detrimental to the progress of the society.
Born into a matrilineal society, the two are sister to a ruler, Katete, and are being groomed to lead, with one destined to mother the next ruler.
As a way to prepare them for this role, they have been given complementary assignments.
Their assignments take them across Malawi, seeking virtues that uplift communities and vices that hold them back.
In the book, Ngoza finds that integrity, being industrious, and peace, are some of the virtues responsible for the growth of the area she visits.
Kasiwa,on the other hand, find that the community was stark on old habits—including population boom, superstitions, gender based violence, drunkenness, which caused misery to their lives.
This is his second book following a Chichewa Mbiri Ya Atumbuka which narrates the history of Tumbuka and Ngoni, published in 2022.
